Betty Lost Her Only Son and Now Meals On Wheels is
Her Only Lifeline

Betty remembers the joy she always felt on Mother's Day when her only child, Charles, would bring her a greeting card with a special message inside. Betty got her last Mother’s Day card from Charles fifteen years ago. He died of a brain aneurysm at age 36. Betty’s husband, a retired brick-layer, died a few years later.

"I miss my family very much," she confesses. "I still read the Mother's Day cards my son sent me when he was alive. You always have good memories. Always."

Betty was also very close to her brother, who moved in with her after her husband died. Just a few years ago, her brother also passed away.

Today, at age 80, Betty is homebound and lives alone inside her small apartment in Washington, D.C. Betty depends on Meals On Wheels for the nutritious meals and human contact she desperately needs to survive.
