Mrs. Jillson spent most of her life in Vermont, where she and her husband raised three children and ran the local general store and post office. Now that she's older, Mrs. Jillson still values her independence and she doesn't want to be a burden on her children. Her children are scattered across the country, although they visit often they can't be with their mother all the time. Mrs. Jillson relies on Meals On Wheels for the nutritious meals she can't make for herself, "I wouldn't be here without it," she says. Meals On Wheels makes it possible for Mrs. Jillson to live on her own and provides peace of mind for her children that someone is checking in on her every day.
What Mrs. Willis remembers most about her mother are the family meals they used to share. Her childhood home was the gathering place for holidays, with aunts, uncles and cousins around the table enjoying her mother's wonderful home-cooked dinners. She fondly remembers learning to knit and crochet from her mother, and the importance of using those skills to be self-sufficient. It is a lesson she has passed on from her mother on to her own daughter. That's why Meals On Wheels is so important to Mrs. Willis. It gives her the freedom to stay in her home and the reassurance of knowing that she can enjoy nutritious meals delivered by a caring and compassionate Meals On Wheels volunteer.
